"To Whom Much Is Given, Much Is Required" - A Letter from our executive director Sean Goode

My mother once gave me a Christmas card. Inscribed on the inside were the words “To whom much is given, much is required.” We grew up with very little and for most of my life I never truly grasped what it was she was saying. How could you require something from someone with nothing? Even with this reality, her words never escaped my mind, taking root and staying firmly planted in my heart. Over many seasons they began to bear fruit, and I finally realized what she was saying: the much I have been given is life—today, this moment—and it requires me to give my all to you.

I never imagined that this commitment to give would result in such a heartfelt exchange.

Many of you leaned into our cause and the type of intentional growth and transformational impact that CHOOSE 180 has experienced since I was given the honor of stewarding our organization in December 2016 is astounding. Below are a few of the highlights:

  • While we continue to work with the King County Prosecuting Attorney’s office to offer youth community in place of criminality, we now also partner with the City of Seattle Attorney’s office to serve 18 to 24-year-olds in the same way.

  • We started offering paid summer internships for our youth participants so that they may develop the job skills they need to be competitive for future employment opportunities.

  • For young people who have been accused of committing more serious offenses we have joined an effort to reduce or eliminate felony charges for some first time offenders

  • We’ve continued to expand our partnerships and have just started working with the Highline School District, providing an intentional, multi-week small support group for students at risk of suspension and expulsion

This is just the beginning, as we envision a world where every young person will have the opportunity to CHOOSE 180. I know it’s ambitious, but we’ve been given so much and as my mother said, much is required.

As this year comes to close, I wish nothing but the best for you and your family. All of us at CHOOSE 180 are better because you are a part of our community of support.

Thank you for committing to CHOOSE 180.
