Pierce County Expansion

CHOOSE 180 Expands Into Pierce County

Nonprofit organizations and systems are coming together to offer support programs to youth and young adults.

We are expanding to offer violence prevention, court diversion, and other programs to youth in Pierce County, WA.

A pilot program launched this March, and additional programs are anticipated to launch in Fall 2025 due to its success and interest. CHOOSE 180 is partnering with Metropolitan Development Council (MDC) to offer programs in Lincoln, Foss, Mt. Tahoma, Stadium, and Silas high schools, with the possibility of expanding to additional schools and community centers.

“The harm our young people are navigating doesn't stop at county lines, so neither can we. Expanding into Pierce County is a bold and intentional move rooted in our belief that youth deserve more than punishment—they deserve possibility. With MDC and our Pierce County community partners, we’re meeting this moment of rising gun violence and school pushout by building pathways to healing, accountability, mentorship and long-term success,” said Nneka Payne, CHOOSE 180 Chief Executive Officer.

School-Based Diversion, CHOOSE Freedom, Court Diversion, and Aftercare programs will be offered for young people ages 12-24. These programs are designed to meet youth where they are–whether in school, at risk of legal system involvement, or navigating life after engagement with the criminal legal system.

“Metropolitan Development Council (MDC) is honored to partner with CHOOSE 180 as we expand our efforts to support youth and families in Tacoma and Pierce County,” said Scott Schubert, MDC Chief Executive Officer. “This partnership reflects our shared belief that every young person deserves to be seen, heard, and supported—especially in a time when gun-related violence continues to harm our communities.”

The expansion is part of CHOOSE 180’s recently-released Five-Year Plan, which also outlines the goal to expand to Yakima and Spokane Counties by 2030.
