Together, we’re Healing toward justice

Empowering Young People to Break Cycles of Violence

The CHOOSE Freedom program is a 14-week transformative initiative designed for young people impacted by gang violence, community violence, gun violence, and incarceration. Our mission is to equip participants with the tools, support, and mindset needed to take control of their future and break free from cycles of harm.

The traumas of incarceration and violence severely impact young people in our community. We believe in a restorative approach to healing and preventing future harm. Instead of perpetuating the cycle of violence and punishment, we can heal and form a stronger community.

Our team, led by people with lived experience, holds group sessions both in detention facilities and in community (via Google Meet) to build relationships, learn from each other, and heal from trauma.

  • Take Personal Accountability – Acknowledge past harm and commit to positive future actions.

  • Develop Practical Life Skills – Learn conflict management, de-escalation techniques, and decision-making strategies.

  • Understand Systemic & Community Factors – Explore the external (or internal) influences that contributed to their circumstances

  • Heal from Trauma – Gain a trauma-informed perspective and begin the healing process

Our Approach

Through a combination of group sessions and one-on-one mentorship, participants will:

  • Reflect on Gun Violence Impact – Understand how gun violence has shaped their lives, families, and communities.

  • Build a Supportive Community – Surrounding and connecting with peers who understand their journey and support their growth.

  • Unlock Their Potential – Recognize their worth and capacity for change. Speaking life into oneself, to never be steered from their path.

Why It Matters

CHOOSE Freedom is not just about avoiding incarceration—it’s about empowerment, healing, and transformation. By addressing the root causes of violence and providing tangible skills for success, we help young people create a future of opportunity, accountability, and hope.

Together, we choose freedom.

Eligibility: Anyone age 12-24 in King County who has been impacted by incarceration and/or gun violence can participate.
