We asked our CHOOSE 180 team to share a book recommendation, or two, that they think folks should read!

If you’re looking for a great book to dive into this summer we put together a list of some of our favorites!

Wondering where to get one of these great reads? Try checking at one of our amazing local libraries:

One Day, Everyone Will Have Always Been Against This by Omar El Akkad

  • One Day -- a really powerful book about the genocide happening in Gaza and how people don't want to speak up when it could impact them personally.

The AI Con: How to Fight Big Tech’s Hype and Create the Future We Want by Emily M. Bender and Alex Hanna

  • AI: an interesting (and scary) book about the downsides of AI such as plagiarism, inaccurate info, racism, and environmental descruction.

Be the Unicorn by William Vanderbloemen

  • We do heavy work every day, making the impact we wish to make isn’t easy, but that’s exactly why we need to find ways to stay light, grow, and bring our best selves to the table. Be a Unicorn is a quick, fun read that reminds us how to stand out, shine bright, and level up (without taking ourselves too seriously). We don’t just want to be another herd of horses, we’re a team of unicorns, and unicorns change the world.

Assata : An Autobiography by Assata Shakur

  • If you're looking to get inspired read Assata. Her autobiography is captivating and enlightening.

Kindred by Octavia E. Butler

  • If you're interested in gaining perspective on enslavement in America through a fiction lens by a science fiction author, read Kindred.

Limitless by Jim Kwik

  • I think this book will open up the mind to a way that will break the cycle of our limited thinking.

The Shining by Stephen King

  • The Shining takes place during a snowstorm in a Colorado hotel with frightening characters and imagery. I am re-reading this story to get into the Halloween mood.

Some of our other recommendations:

  • Becoming Abolitionists by Derecka Purnell

  • Sippin Dom Perignon Through A Straw by Eddie Ndopu

  • The Sun Does Shine by Anthony Ray Hinton

Happy Reading
