The Power of Inclusive Language

Words matter. We must work to shift the narratives for the benefit of all of us!

Inclusive language makes a difference.

At CHOOSE 180 we make an effort to use language that supports young people instead of harmful labels.

We use language that empowers instead of disenfranchises. Rather than referring to people as statistics, we choose to see them as individuals.

By normalizing making swaps in our everyday vocabulary, and using compassionate language, we can reduce the harm our words may have and encourage others to do the same!

When we make these updates to use inclusive language, we:

  • Humanize the people we’re talking about

  • Accurately describe what we’re talking about

  • Take into account how our language impacts those around us

  • Let people know that we are a safe space

Language matters. The framing around youth and young adults influences people’s perceptions as much as the actual story. The language we use shapes the way we view people and systems. Terms like “violent criminals,” “bad kids,” or “super predators” continue the cycle of negative stereotypes and don’t allow for open conversations or growth.

When we use respectful and inclusive language we can shift the narrative away from seeing young people as the problem and take a step back to see what supports these young people are lacking. When we create a more supportive and inclusive environment where individuals feel empowered to take advantage of the support offered to them from organizations like our, we all thrive.

Hear from young people about the importance of shifting harmful narratives to support, resources, presence, and guidance.

Together we are building a brighter, more inclusive future for all. Join us on this journey and consider updating some of the language you use!
