Celebrating Heritage All Year Long

We’ve been celebrating our heritage and history all year long here at CHOOSE 180! A thread throughout these months was connection through food and the opportunity to learn about each other's cultures and history.

Black History Month

In February, our team kicked off the year with a kickback to celebrate Black History Month. We played dominoes, listened to great music, and enjoyed chicken wings, collard greens, mac & cheese, and banana pudding made with love by members of our team. We're keeping Black history alive all year, and we commemorated the month with a blog.

Women’s History Month

In March, we honored Women’s History Month by learning about several women who have been critical to activist movements from women’s rights to health care to education.

We talked about the intersection of gender and race within the movements, and challenges these changemakers faced or continue to face. Members of the team gave a lesson then invited the whole team to play a Loteria trivia game to test their knowledge.

Asian American, Native Hawaiian and Pacific Islanders Heritage Month

CHOOSE 180 staff at the Wing Luke Museum

In May, we honored Asian American, Native Hawaiian and Pacific Islanders (AANHPI) Heritage Month! Throughout the month, our team gathered together to have amazing food from local AANHPI restaurants in our community: Pho Vina, Marination, and Kauai Family. Several staff members organized a trivia game for our staff on AANHPI history and a field trip to the amazing Wing Luke Museum. See our trip to the museum on our Instagram!

Latine Heritage Month

We celebrated Latine Heritage Month with a presentation about the Chicano Moratorium and facts about the Chicano movement that enlightened staff members. Additionally Julissa (Director of Advocacy) and Daicia (Expressive Arts Therapist) wrote a blog about what Latine Heritage Month means to them. They even brought a piñata to the office full of delicious Mexican candies—check out our TikTok of our staff taking turns at the piñata!

We recognize how important it is to celebrate heritage, history, and culture. Our stories and heritage are not always amplified. Sharing our history and heritage can help us see our similarities. We plan to keep learning and celebrating more cultures in 2024.
